Model 911!!!

So you want to model? Well before walking into this glamorous business there are few things that you should be aware of. First thing first, do you have the potential to model? So many wannabe models don’t realize that it takes more than height to be a model and just because someone says that you are cute does not mean that you have what it takes. So try looking in the mirror and ask yourself “Are there models on the runway, in magazines, or on television that look like me?” If the answer is no, and please be honest do not sell yourself a false aspiration, find a new occupation. In order to be a model or celebrity you have to have that “it” factor. Just recently an agent friend of mine was explaining to me how this young girl came into his office standing 5”1 and wanted to be a high fashion model. This is very disappointing to me, because this young lady apparently didn’t research the field that she wanted to go into. If you want to be a lawyer you educate yourself with the tools needed to be successful, models must do the same thing.

Now for those of you that actually do have a unique look, height, and desire to pursue a career in modeling, you now need to know the tools of the trade. Without pictures you cannot book work, so set up a shoot with a great photographer. Check out several so you will know who works well with your gender, ethnic background, and type of modeling you want to pursue. In this process many young models get caught up, many perverts who pose as photographers lure young hopefuls into their studio for a SFP (sex for pics), and along with this they offer the young amateurs superstardom. One great way to scout the perfect photographer is look for a referral from other models, in some rare cases the model may actually send you in the right direction.

Deciding whether you want to be a freelance model or going exclusive is another important factor in deciding what you want to do with your career. When deciding what you want to do there are pros and cons, if you want to have full control over your career, keep all percentages of your pay, and find your own work then freelance may be the route for you; however if you want career guidance, avoid clients not making payments, and having someone assist you in finding new career opportunities then seek representation. Having an agent is having protection from the scams and deceit that floats throughout the industry. So many people are aware of how many people dream of modeling and they take advantage of them by charging them to model in their fashion shows (registration fees count too), charging for website placement, or agents charging models upfront. One tip to remember is your agent works for you; you pay them after they do the job.

Another aspect of the industry that you should be aware of is the difference between an agent and a manager. Your agent is responsible for sending you on castings and informing you of whether you booked the job or not. Your manager oversees your personal career they make sure you are paid, oversees your image, and basically serves as your parent for your modeling career. One tip that you might want to keep in mind for this as well is make sure your manager is someone that you trust. Although you should trust everyone who represents you, the manager is very important, because they are the person who will oversee most of your career. Can your manager and agent be the same person? Of course, many times managers are the ones who sends the model out for the castings and books the job for them. When working with an agent or manager make sure you are the favorite, so you will be the one on their mind most of the time and you get first take on everything from jobs, to industry events.

Now that you are aware of some of the many things that are important in jump starting your modeling career now make sure this is the career for you. Some of the most glamorous jobs are not so glamorous when actually working in that field. Many times you have to wait for months for pay, the hours are long and gruesome at times, and you have to deal with a lot of fake people. One thing I learned from modeling is make friends with people with other career aspirations; you cannot trust another model as far as you can throw them. Many models are only looking out for themselves and their own career. If you do decide to befriend a model, please make sure you have different looks, this can cause hardships in your friendship, because you will compete for the same jobs. Always remember even though you feel this way, you never reveal it, keep on your wonderful smile and remember to work this industry like it will work you. Now that you have had modeling 101 you need to make the decision on whether this is what you want, because time is ticking and you will not be young forever.

Dr. Allen Speaks the Truth about Schizophrenic...

So I am running down the runway in a hurry, not because I missed my call time for a fashion show, but to speak the truth to my audience before their exit. I am model Dr. Allen and I am going to prescribe the truth to my readers. Many of you remember me and my side kick Mo’Nique from our starts with Intersection Inc., FMTV, or Gala Models and Talent. I take you back a few years ago… years that people still speak on… it was Fall Fashion Week 2005 the tearing down of my career. Allen and Mo’Nique have both had very successful careers in front of the camera. I have walked the runway for several major designers, several editorial jobs, not to mention countless commercials; however in this business you learn that the glamorous jobs don’t always have such a glamorous paycheck. Some of my closest friends during this time of my wonderful modeling career were several America’s Next Top Models, actors, and one particular star from Bravo’s Search for America’s Most Gorgeous Male Model, who was actually chosen to be featured in this story, but backed out the night before the shoot because of a horrible situation that was blamed on myself and my Wonder Twin Sister, this is the emergency that I am going to discuss.

Fashion Week Under Bryant Park aka Schizophrenic is the fashion show that put Intersection Inc. on the map. The show that hired some of the industries most promising models, designers, stylist, make-up artists, hair stylists, and two up and coming coordinators really has impacted New York until this day. I myself actually retired from the industry after the show, in hopes that people would forget about it. Why would someone want to forget about such an amazing show? Well Gala Models and Talent chose not to pay participants of this show and I and my company were to be blamed. That’s kind of what happens in this business, when someone is burned they choose to blame everyone affiliated with the project, due to the unprofessional tactics of this particular company (that no longer exists) I lost my reliable reputation, accountability, and several friends. Not only did this company not pay the participants, but I wasn’t paid for the hard work and dedication I put into the show as well. My sister and I had worked extremely hard toward the success of this show and because the person behind Gala appeared to be so innocent, we received all the blamed… I never worked the same in the business again!

This story is giving anyone who participated in this show the truth… I am giving you the facts straight up as Dr. Allen experienced them first hand. I have never had any of your money… I was burned worst than any participant of the fashion show. I lost my apartment, company, friends, and reputation, because funds were not released from this particular show. Making a come back in this business has even backfired today, when the original model for this doctor spread canceled at 11:30 at night, before his shoot for FBM. He canceled because I was affiliated with Schizophrenic, Intersection Inc. has been involved in its fair amount of scandals and a lot of hard work, blood, sweat, and tears went into creating such a great company. I hated when I had to part the company and go after other endeavors on my own; however all good things come to an end. I just want to clear the air about the one major downfall that has caused such uproar in the business.

If you were in fact apart of Schizophrenic or any other project that Intersection Inc. produced and you felt that your treatment was unjust or you were not paid… please talk to Tito Rosirio (the crook himself), he was the financial backing for Intersection Inc.’s projects and he is the reason I myself was not paid and you! My case is closed and I prescribe for you forgiveness, because you cannot go forward without forgiving and moving on… I am here to get my career back and that’s my final plea!

MAKEUP EMERGENCY!

Ring the alarm! It happens to all of us. You need to look fabulous but don’t have the time to do your makeup. ARGH! This is what we call a Makeup Emergency! But never fear, we’re giving you two easy survival makeup looks that anyone can do in 5 minutes! Sounds too good to be true? Get your timers ready!

LO
OK #1 – Bronze Glow

Step 1: (1 minute)

Apply tinted moisturizer all over. Tinted moisturizers are great. They hydrate, give light coverage and have SPF, they’re three products in one! Perfect for the woman on the go.

Step 2: (2 minutes)

With fingers dab a Bronzer (or blush) to cheeks and to eyes. Using the same color on the cheek and eyes will save you time and also gives a uniformed flawless look.

Step 3: (1 minute)

Apply water-proof mascara to Lashes. This step is key to opening up the eyes.

Step 4: (1 minute)

Slick a gloss onto the lips (preferably one with SPF) and you’re ready to go. Try a colored gloss to vamp up the look!

TOTAL TIME: 5 Minutes to Marvelous!

*Tip: A recent study by National Online Makeup Artists reported that women spend 63% of their time in the morning digging through their makeup bags searching for products. Try emptying out your makeup on a flat surface in the morning. You’ll find your products faster and sav

e time in the morning to finish your cup of coffee*

L
OOK #2 – Natural Glow

Step 1: (1 minute)

Apply Wet/Dry Powder Foundation all over face. Wet/Dry Powder formulas are great for summer. They can be applied with a light coverage for day or go full coverage for night. Try Sephora Brands Powder foundation. They’re oil-free, have a great shade range and are great on the go.

Step 2: (2 minutes)

Dab liquid stain to lip and cheeks with fingers. Benetint by Benefit is great and works on almost all skin tones. With this product it is important to work quickly as it dries very fast.

Step 3: (1 minute)

Apply water-proof mascara and liner to lash line. Put them on once in the morning and all you’re set for all day Try Lancomes Definicils Mascara in Black. For liner, try Makeup Forevers Pearly Water-proof liners.

Step 4: (1 minute)

Slick a gloss onto the lips (preferably one with SPF) and you’re ready to go!

TOTAL TIME: 5 Minutes to Marvelous!

BUDGE-PROOF MAKEUP TIP!

Use waterproof makeup
Does your makeup run like a sprinter in a race? You put it on and it seems as though 2 seconds later it’s come off. Waterproof makeup may be a great option for you. There are so many more waterproof products on the market today than ever before, which is great for summertime. When the sun is out we spend more time outdoors in the sun and we perspire which makes our makeup move. This summer avoid the “raccoon eyes” by wearing waterproof mascara and liners.
Most mascara on the market today are a “water-resistant” formula. The difference between waterproof and water resistant is that waterproof you could swim in. So get out your flip-flops, beach ball and hit the water!

** If you use waterproof makeup be sure to use waterproof makeup remover **

Also, try wearing primers. There are many types of primers on the market which are made specifically to give longevity to your makeup.

Now you’re ready to say goodbye to Makeup Emergencies and look great doing it!

Simply Featured- PEG Entertainment

With fashion taking on full force in New York, this month FBM chooses to take our readers on a late, but much needed journey to another city... Let's check out what is happening in Philadelphia when FBM speaks with Preston Graham of PEG Entertainment...

1. What is PEG? The mission and motto?

Well, to sum it up PEGentertainment is a company that is committed to enhancing the lives of audience members of Philadelphia who otherwise would not be exposed to such performing art. Our mission is to display and cultivate the numerous talents that the Philadelphia performing artist has to feed its own community.

2. Who is the founder of PEG and why did he/she create it?

I, Preston Graham am the founder of PEGentertainment. I created this entertainment company due to my intense love for the arts. In 2001, I directed my first variety show, “Tabloid” for Phyre-Arts and Entertainment (Founded by Gerald Brandon Bell), which was a sold-out success. With the thrill of directing an extremely successful show fresh on my mind, I decided to develop my very own entertainment company as a way to continue the flow of accessible, young creativity into the community. My father, Edward Graham, was the primary supporter of this idea. Having supported Phyre-arts and Entertainment, and given my artistic background, my father wanted nothing more than to see his very own son take on this same type of venture. Unfortunately, he was not able to see the rise of PEG due to his passing in 2003. In paying homage to its #1 fan, the name of the company was altered to include his name. Formerly PG Entertainment, The initials PEG stand for: Preston Edward Graham. This is my way of keeping his vivacious spirit with the company forever. I am currently producing PEG’s latest project: Fashion Show & Networking Party.

3. How is PEG related to fashion?

We are open to participating in all forms of art. With fashion being such a huge influence in the artistic world, and an art in itself, it was only a matter of time before PEG entered the realm of fashion. When one thinks of fashion they think of the runway. The models have different walks and posses. That’s performing arts. Taking the stage, modeling different pieces and showing the audience how they too can look and/or feel in the clothing, make up, or hair using subtle body language and facial expressions is all a type of performance.

4. What projects are currently b
eing produced?

Right now, of main focus is the fashion show. Although it’s not a new experience for the members of PEG, this is a new venture for the company as a whole. Our next project is a variety show. This show will consist of comedic skits, singing, dancing, fashion and spoken word. We are in the midst of writing scripts and scouting talent for the next project.

5. Relating to the fashion show, what designers are being featured and on what merits were they chosen by?

The designers to be featured are Symphony Couture Limited, C Denim Clothing, Lee Mirah, Distinct le’ Couture, and Lung Pearl. They were selected by members of PEG who took an interest in the designers and what they had to offer. All the designers are from the Philadelphia area and each have something different style.

6. What is the fashion show's theme and inspiration behind it?

The fashion shows theme is “birth”. Its may sound funny, but this is our first official show. This is the first time someone has had a fashion/networking party. Na’Eem Catchings is the director of the show and this is also his first time directing with PEG. He is very excited to display his ability and we are excited to work under his direction.

7. Is the main focus of this event fashion, networking, or parting?

The main focus of the show is networking. To be honest you do not see a lot of young adults getting together and sharing their talents or connections often. We just figured we would put a little spin in it and add some fashion to it. We don’t want to have a party that’s too formal. We like to have a little fun and that’s what you will find that night.

8. Is this the first show being produced by PEG?

Technically this is the first show that’s being produced by PEG. We say technically because we put together a variety in January of 2004 in Philadelphia but at the time we didn’t have a name so we produced it under Phyre-arts and Entertainment. But now we are stepping out on our own with what we learned. So this is definitely an opportunity to watch us take our first baby steps.

9. Will PEG's projects be a traveling thing or only Philadelphia based?

Actually PEG has affiliations with New York , Washington D.C., New Jersey , and Delaware . Even though it’s our home, we are more than willing to branch into other cities and regions. We love Philly! But stay tuned we could be coming to a city near you!

10. How can others become involved with projects that are being created by PEG?

Others can become involved by contacting our email @
pegentertainment@yahoo.com. We are definitely looking for people who want to be behind the scene such as lighting designers, sound coordinators, and photographers.

11. Is their a sense of fashion urgency in Philadelphia ? If so how is PEG addressing it?

There is a sense of fashion emergency everywhere. Fads change everyday. Right now we are seeing them revert back to the 80’s, 70’s and 50’s. Who knows what the next style will be. Although it’s good to reminisce on old styles, trends we should move forward. That’s what we are trying to accomplish with “birth”. The designers are introducing their contemporary, up-to-the-minute designs, styles and concepts to the world of fashion, more directly to the city of Philadelphia , via PEGentertainment.

12. Are you still seeking talent for any of your projects?

For our next project we are seeking singers, dancers, actors, poets, models, etc. We are always looking for new talent and this next show will be something to be apart of.

13. What is the best way for designers, models, make-up artists and other fashionistas to contact PEG?

The best way for people to get in contact with PEG is through email
http://us.f316.mail.yahoo.com/ym/Compose?To=PEGentertainment@yahoo.com, of course the ever popular myspace.com/pegent or call Preston @ 267-879-1344. We will be having auditions soon you can check email or Myspace for details.

PEG Entertainment is hosting their 1st Annual Fashion Show Friday August 17, 2007 @ North American Motors Inn, 4444 City Ave., Philadelphia, PA, 10:30 PM
